The project is centered on the Japanese legend of Daruma ("dah-roo-mah"), a 5th century monk and the founder of Zen Buddhism. The DCTO ('dik-toe') figure is Dacosta's modern streamlined interpretation of the traditional Daruma dolls which are used in Japan both when starting a new endeavor and as celebratory gifts. Daruma usually depicted limbless and with unpainted eyes in red garb. People paint in the left eye of the doll to symbolize their commitment to a goal and paint in the right eye when they have achieved the goal.
